PanOptix Pro disadvantages and advantages need to be carefully considered to allow you to make the best decision for long term vision goals. Your eye surgeon will help you consider your lifestyle needs and recommend the ideal IOL for you. 99% of patients that received the Panoptix lens in the FDA trial said they would choose the same lens all over again if given the chance. That is probably why it is the most popular multiple focus lens in the world, but there are disadvantages and they are real.
PanOptix Pro Disadvantages
All multiple focus and extended depth of focus (EDOF) lenses split or redirect light the light that enters your eye. They direct some of the light to objects up close and some for distance objects. This is how they allow you to see both near and far at the same time. Each image has less light intensity because it is divided. Presenting lesser amounts of light in images can affect the quality and contrast of the image.
Most patients can’t detect these subtle changes in contrast, but a small percentage can. Patients that can notice this will feel like distance images are not quite as clear. Some notice a small shadow around letters when they read and some see night halos.
Night Halos
Cataract cause night vision problems for most patients. Most cataract patient experience glare symptoms with headlights at night and some have halos around lights (Night Halos). Cataract surgery eliminates night glare and night halos for most, but not all patients. Even if patients do have some night glare or night halos after surgery, most feel like it is much less than they had before.
Night halos can occur after cataract surgery with any IOL, but they are more common will multiple focus IOLs, like the Panoptix Pro. Some PanOptix Pro patients don’t have any haloing and most of those that do describe it as an observations rather than a complaint. A small percent feel their night driving is affected. Patients with average or below average night driving needs usually are not concerned with this potential side effect.
Night Time Driving Needs
Those with above average night driving needs, occupational night drivers, or those that want to fully advantage night driving will often choose a monofocal IOL or a different style of multiple focus IOL like the Vivity IOL. The Vivity IOL gives distance and computer vision without glasses without an increased risk of night haloing as compared to a standard IOL.

One in one hundred PanOptix patients wish they had selected a different IOL and if you happen to be the one, we carefully explore all options together. We are a team and committed to getting you to your ideal vision after considering the risks, benefits, and alternatives carefully.
Dry Eye and Panoptix Pro IOL
we address the quality of your tear film. If you have dry eyes and and we improve your tear film, many patients become happy with their IOL choice.
Healing and Accurace of the Panoptix Pro Lens
Most patients have some swelling in their cornea after surgery that temporarily decrease the quality of your vision. The post op drops help decrease this swelling. Many become happy with the quality of their vision improves with complete healing.
Accuracy makes a big difference in the quality of your vision. We do a number of measurement with sophisticated instruments to determine which IOL power to place. We use the laser and or astigmatism correcting Panoptix Pro lenses to decrease astigmatism. These all improve accuracy, but don’t guarantee it. After surgery your optometrist will check to see if you are a bit near sighted, far sighted, or have some left over astigmatism. If lack of accuracy decreases your vision, then we explore the ideal way to improve your accuracy. This could involve glasses, contacts, astigmatism surgery, laser vision correction or IOL power exchange.
Panoptix Pro IOL Exchange
If none of these options are viable or helpful then we are forced to ask if a multifocus IOL just will not work with your visual system. The PanOptix works great for most patients and is the best chance to achieve freedom from glasses for many. Life is an adventure and we move forward as a team to help you achieve your visual goals. If we chase that dream but ultimately find that multiple focus vision doesn’t work for you, we often decide to remove the lens and put in a different type of IOL. You wouldn’t love that and I don’t love that. What we would love is working as a team to get you your best possible vision. This requires that we use the best information we have at each stage of our journey together.
Conclusion
No IOL is as good as the one that God gave you. Unfortunately, if you are reading this, then it means that the one you were born with is disfunctioning and needs to be replaced. We would work to help you pick the IOL that gives you the best chance for your ideal lifetime vision. I put the predecessor to the Panoptix Pro (the Restor IOL) in my father but put the light adjustable IOL in my wife. Why the difference?
