Hi, I am Dr Gary Foster, a board certified ophthalmologist. I specialize in cataract surgery and laser eye surgery in Colorado and Wyoming.
I am proud to work at The Eye Center of Northern Colorado. We have tradition of excellence in eye care that goes back more than 100 years. The secret sauce in this success has been the extraordinary friendship and camaraderie among the doctors. We are a multi-specialty ophthalmic practice, that is, we specialize in all types of eye disease and surgery. This allows us to collaborate and bring the benefit of our combined experience to help care for your vision. We have 6 offices spread through the towns of Fort Collins, Greeley, Loveland, and Cheyenne.
I grew up in Iowa with my four brothers and two sisters. We had no trouble finding trouble so some of my earliest memories involve our family doctor who always seemed to appear in times of crisis to make things better. That is probably why I always wanted to be a doctor. I wanted to help others in their times of need. To achieve that, I graduated with Cumme Laude from BYU and then with honors from medical school (University of Utah). I completed my residency training in Ophthalmology at the Moran Eye Center, scoring in the 99th percentile on the National Board Exams (highest score possible).
Later in life I became nearsighted and had to wear glasses and contact lenses to see. I viewed this problem as a disability and, when LASIK became available, I jumped at the chance to be cured from my vision problems.
I had LASIK and still can not believe the change it has made in my life. Since then I have helped many thousands of friends solve their visual disabilities by gaining freedom from glasses and contact lenses through LASIK, SMILE, Phakic IOLs and advanced technology IOLs.
Over the past decade I have been heavily involved in research projects to improve eye care technology worldwide. I have used that knowledge to educate and help other physicians by regularly lecturing, teaching, or inviting them to observe in surgery.
I recently served on the Cataract Committee, chaired the Complex and Challenging Cataract Committee, and co-chaired the Clinical Classroom Committee for the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS). ASCRS asked me to create a group of six of the most experienced cataract surgeons in the world to help train other doctors how to manage complex cases. Each year we would pick a couple of the most vexing cataract surgical problems and collaborate on how to best avoid/treat them. We would then publish our results in medical journals to help improve our craft.
I serve on the board of the Central American Eye Clinics and head to El Salvador every few months to an OR we created in Santa Ana to perform cataract surgery and train local ophthalmologists.
Outside of work I focus on my family and my church. I have three children, all in college right now, and the most amazing wife in the history of the world. Most of my free time revolves around their interests with wake surfing, snowboarding, hunting, fishing, and now most importantly, with my granddaughters. If you are a grandparent, you KNOW what I mean.
My love for pickleball has reached obsession levels just short of needing an intervention. I tend to relax and do my best thinking while digging around in the dirt, so I spend a lot of time puttering around in my perennial and vegetable gardens. On Sundays I teach Sunday School to the 16 year olds.
I am grateful to all of those that have trusted me to help them with their vision over the years. When it all adds up it turns out I have probably done more cataract surgeries than anyone ever in Colorado. Fortunately, I love what I do and recently increased how much I work to be more available for you. I hope that the posts in this blog will help you better understand and protect the wonder of your vision. If I can help you in any other way with cataract surgery and laser eye surgery in Colorado and Wyoming, please click the contact section of the page and drop me a line.
