Eye Strain

Eye Strain is the almost universal plague of our digital age according to a recent report by the Vision Council entitled, “Screens, Phones, Tablets and More: Keeping Yours Eyes Save in a Digital Age.” The report found that 70% of those in the United States suffer from digital eye strain. These results were reported in a recent Eye World article, Volume 17, Number 37. Gamers are at particular risk. Stay home moms where singled out as at risk due to averaging around 11 hours of digital media consumption per day as well as career climbers who are spending around 6 hours per day on digital platforms between tablets, smartphones, and computers.

Interestingly, although the majority of Americans suffer from some form of digital strain only half were actively trying to decrease it. This is unfortunate as a great deal can be done to mitigate this problem. Some simple solutions include increasing your font size, taking a short break every hour and gazing at distant targets for a few moments to rest from near focus tasks, and using artificial tears to revitalize your eyes. These are helpful, but nothing can substitute the value of a careful exam from a qualified eye care provider in your area if you suffer from digital eye strain.
